Understanding Kapha Dosha: Part III in the Series
Someone with predominant elements of water and earth in their constitution are considered Kapha in Ayurveda. We generally see these people as well grounded, flexible and strong. They have thick, gorgeous hair and large, friendly eyes. We love it when these people are our friends; they like to hang out and laugh at all our jokes.
When these people get out of balance however, we see weight-gain, an inability to get fired up and possibly even depression.
So what is Kapha dosha?
Kapha-dominant people have higher levels of water and earth elements in their constitution. They are the complete opposite of Vata types who are associated with the lightness of ether and air. Water and earth are heavy. They’re also stable. These qualities contribute to Kapha’s grounded nature. They’re good caretakers, nurses and teachers. They possess a genuine nurturing quality.
As doshas are associated with seasons (we’re in high Pitta season right now!), they are also associated with times of day. Kapha time is 6am-10am and 6pm-10pm. If you’re someone who’s never been a “morning person” you may have qualities of Kapha dosha. Remember, Kapha’s qualities are heavy, dense and static. It can be challenging to get them moving!
That’s great, but why is 6pm-10pm also associated with Kapha?
Think about it: by 6pm you’re probably done with work (or school), you’re either commuting home or you’re already home. Maybe you’ve eaten dinner (ok, ok… in the city you’re probably eating later, but still) my point is; you’re ready to WIND DOWN. You’re done with the day, you want to watch some tv, have quality time with your family or even curl up with a good book. The running around is done. We get ourselves GROUNDED and set up for the next day.
Since like attracts like, if Kapha types overdo it on heavy, cold or fried foods, they’re likely to get out of balance. What does that look like? Think about how you feel after a heavy meal. Do you want to go work out? Not likely. Chances are you’ll fall asleep watching tv, or just put off doing your workout until tomorrow. Or, if these folks eat too much of these foods they’ll put on weight (though let’s face it, anybody who eats a LOT of fried food is asking for trouble!).
To feel their best, Kapha people should try some vinyasa yoga with a lot of sun salutations: get moving! Additionally, waking up early in the day – with the sunrise – will help increase motion. This helps them avoid feeling “stuck”.
Diet-wise, Kapha-dominant people should limit red meat, sweeteners, dairy and oils. They’d do best with organic fruits, veggies and legumes. All healthy options!
